Effects of Dietary Inclusion of Seaweed, Heat Stress and Genetic Strain on Performance, Plasma Biochemical and Hematological Parameters in Laying Hens
This study was planned to investigate the effects of seaweed supplementation, genetic strain, heat stress and their interactions on laying hen performances, blood chemistry and hematology. In a short-term trial, laying hens of the two genetic lines Lohman LSL-Lite (White) and Lohman Brown-Lite (Brown) were supplemented with Chondrus crispus (CC) at 3% for 21 days, while a control group was not.
In a long-term trial, the same two strains were assigned to control (0%), 3% red seaweed Chondrus crispus (CC) or 0.5% brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum (AN)-supplemented diets for 41 weeks, concluding with a four-week control or heat-stress period. The White hens displayed higher egg production and a lower feed/egg ratio. The short-term inclusion of CC significantly reduced the feed intake, weight gain and feed/egg ratio.
The long-term seaweed intake affected the plasma albumin and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) (p < 0.05), and there were significant strain-heat stress interactions; heat stress in the Brown birds was associated with reduced protein, globulin and glucose and increased cholesterol and GGT levels and higher heterophil-to-lymphocyte (H/L) ratios (p < 0.05) in response to heat stress (p < 0.05).
In conclusion, a long-term seaweed supplementation affected the plasma protein and enzyme profiles, yet had little effect on hen leukocyte counts and the overall performance.

A Soft Sensor Approach Based on an Echo State Network Optimized by Improved Genetic Algorithm
- In the process of fault diagnosis and the health and safety operation evaluation of modern industrial processes, it is crucial to measure important state variables, which cannot be directly detected due to limitations of economy, technology, environment and space.
- Therefore, this paper proposes a data-driven soft sensor approach based on an echo state network (ESN) optimized by an improved genetic algorithm (IGA). Firstly, with an ESN, a data-driven model (DDM) between secondary variables and dominant variables is established. Secondly, in order to improve the prediction performance, the IGA is utilized to optimize the parameters of the ESN.
- Then, the immigration strategy is introduced and the crossover and mutation operators are changed adaptively to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm and address the problem that the algorithm falls into the local optimum. Finally, a soft sensor model of an ESN optimized by an IGA is established (IGA-ESN), and the advantages and performance of the proposed method are verified by estimating the alumina concentration in an aluminum reduction cell.
- The experimental results illustrated that the proposed method is efficient, and the error was significantly reduced compared with the traditional algorithm.
Advances in Genetic Characterization and Genotype-Phenotype Correlation of Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy in the Personalized Medicine Era
Currently, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and the related condition Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) can be usually diagnosed using physical examination and genetic testing. While BMD features partially functional dystrophin protein due to in-frame mutations, DMD largely features no dystrophin production because of out-of-frame mutations. However, BMD can feature a range of phenotypes from mild to borderline DMD, indicating a complex genotype-phenotype relationship.
Despite two mutational hot spots in dystrophin, mutations can arise across the gene. The use of Maxanim multiplex ligation amplification (MLPA) can easily assess the copy number of all exons, while next-generation sequencing (NGS) can uncover novel or confirm hard-to-detect mutations.
Exon-skipping therapy, which targets specific regions of the dystrophin gene based on a patient’s mutation, is an especially prominent example of personalized medicine for DMD. To maximize the benefit of exon-skipping therapies, accurate genetic diagnosis and characterization including genotype-phenotype correlation studies are becoming increasingly important.
